Benazir Bhutto assassinated in Pakistan

Former Pakistani leader Benazir Bhutto, the first woman prime minister of Islamic Pakistan, was assassinated in an attack at an election rally in the city of Rawalpindi today. Initial reports indicate the attacker struck minutes after Bhutto addressed thousands of supporters in Rawalpindi, 8 miles south of Islamabad. She was shot in the neck and chest by the attacker, who then blew himself up, killing at least 22 others. This event has worldwide implications - including those to the United States.

A spokesperson for the al-Qaeda terrorist network has claimed responsibility for the death on Thursday of former Pakistani prime minister Benazir Bhutto.

"We terminated the most precious American asset which vowed to defeat [the] mujahadeen," Al-Qaeda’s commander and main spokesperson Mustafa Abu Al-Yazid told Adnkronos International (AKI) in a phone call from an unknown location, speaking in faltering English. Al-Yazid is the main al-Qaeda commander in Afghanistan.

It is believed that the decision to kill Bhutto, who is the leader of the opposition Pakistan People's Party (PPP), was made by al-Qaeda No. 2, the Egyptian doctor, Ayman al-Zawahiri in October.

Death squads were allegedly constituted for the mission and ultimately one cell comprising a defunct Lashkar-i-Jhangvi’s Punjabi volunteer succeeded in killing Bhutto.

It’s the ‘moment of truth’ for psephologists, once again

A well-known psephologist had, in a recent article which read nothing short of an epitaph for Narendra Modi, had spoken of Gujarat poll outcome as the chief minister’s “moment of truth.” Today, with the poll results out and his prediction of 92-100 seats quite out of sync with reality, it is more a moment of truth for the pollsters than for Modi.

After going awfully wrong with UP and Punjab’s seat forecasts, it is now time for the hyper-ventilating psephologists to face the bitter truth of having done little more than garnering TRPs for the channels which spent hours debating their forecasts.

The pollsters, who soon after the first phase of polls in south Gujarat, interpreted their forecasts of a neck-and-neck fight between the Congress and the BJP as indications that “Modi could actually lose the election,” would now have to explain why the chief minister ended up with 117 seats, a good 26 seats above the half-way mark, while the Congress and allies stopped short at 62.

Let’s look at what Mr Yogendra Yadav of Centre for the Study of Developing Societies said on the eve of first phase of polling in Gujarat. “Democracy is taking revenge on Mr Narendra Modi. This election may well be the long-deferred moment of truth for the man who invoked popular mandate to bypass norms, laws or the Constitution,” he had warned. Well, rather than democracy taking revenge on Mr Modi, it has chosen to extend his lease, and handsomely, at that. His themes of vibrant Gujarat, intolerance towards terrorists and development have clicked well with the electorate, which has spoken and put Modi in charge once again.

At least four major pollster tie-ups were in the fray for the Gujarat assembly forecasts: CNN-IBN-Dainik Bhaskar-CSDS which predicted a final tally of 92-100 for the BJP and 77-85 for the Congress; NDTV which gave the BJP 90-110 seats and the Congress 70-95; Star News had predicted 103 seats for the BJP and 76 for the Congress and, Zee News which forecast 101 seats for the BJP and 74 for the Congress. The first two surveys were clever enough to play safe, taking a wide band of 92-100 and 90-110 to predict the BJP’s performance. The surprising part is that though none of the surveys showed Modi as short of the half-way mark, they were rather conservative in describing his impending victory as “Modi may make it, only just.”

Ironically, the opinionated psephologists were very charitable in forecasting the Congress’ prospects. Around 70 seats was the lowest that they were giving the grand old party, which has been out of power in the state for 17 years, and the most optimistic estimate by a 24x7 channel even gave the Congress a clear majority with 95 seats.

This is not the first time that the poll forecasts have gone awry. The exit poll surveys for the 2007 assembly poll in Punjab put the Congress and SAD-BJP combine as close contenders, giving the former an edge. The results overturned the forecasts, to say the least: the SAD-BJP ended up way ahead with 67 seats, while the Congress could manage only 44 seats.

In UP, no pollster worth his salt could sense an absolute majority for the BSP. A hung assembly, with the SP and the BSP fighting it out for the top slot, was as far as the pollsters could get. Ms Mayawati, of course, couldn’t care less: She, possibly, had sensed that her social engineering formula was working and would bring her a historic win.

This only shows that poll predictions are best left to those who have an ear to the ground and not those who rely on flawed samples for results that can justify their skewed vision of democracy.

Sleek masala entertainer, is a genre which Tamil cinema is not much used to. Thanks to bravery of Vishnu and Ajith, you will see more such movies from now on.

To remake a film which was a trendsetter of its times involving someone who was and continues to be the super star, requires sharp skills and is tantamount to walking on thin ice. But where Vishnu Vardhan scores is in his crystal clear vision. He doesn’t want to challenge the original nor change its content. All he wants to do is to repackage it stylishly for today’s trend with some present avant-garde styles in film making. The deliberate attempts by the director not to follow the super star’s style are palpable in every frame which has made Billa stand out tall and high.Ajith as the ruthless David Billa is a revelation. Stylish, menacing and electrifying, he seems to have thoroughly enjoyed the challenge and has completely lived up to it. Rajinikanth can definitely be proud of his successor he has chosen for the tough job.

As the simpleton Velu, Ajith is lively and light, combining with Prabhu for some great moments. When asked by Prabhu to don the role of Billa, Velu expresses his dislike saying that Lord Muruga will not approve of this. When Prabhu sights sura samhara as an example, Ajith counters him saying that ‘avarukku aaru thala, aana enakku orey thala’, having his fans simply break into raptures.The introductory scene of Nayantara rocks and is on par with such scenes of any other hero of current times. She looks fit, debonair and effortlessly sizzles. Namitha as CJ and Billa’s lover appears in glamorous outfits and satisfies her fans. Prabhu as DCP, cannot be better. Rahman as Interpol officer has done his job well.Action scenes directed by stunt man William Ong are the highlights. The car chase sequences are first of its kind in Tamil, with Ajith’s racing image adding to the grandeur. Sound effects are perfect and in sync with natural sound and the credit goes to
Ayyappan. His efforts come to the fore especially in action sequences. Yuvan Shankar does it once again. ‘My name is Billa’, though shot differently, lacks the original’s magic. The ‘Vethalayai Pottendi’ number could also have been better.Vishnu doesn’t waste too much time or dialogues on character building. He seems to have depended more on rapid cuts to make the screen play tighter and taut. The two biggest pillars of support for him come from costume department and cinematography section. Kudos to Vishnu’s wife, Anu Vardhan’s hard work and eye for details to get the colors and feel of the costumes perfect. Nirav Shah, the cinematographer’s work is of superlative nature and the result is an absolute visual delight. Seamless editing by Sreekar Prasad adds to the flow of the film.

On the whole, neatly packaged, Billa has lived up to its hype. If you are looking for an enjoyable fantasy ride, you wouldn’t be disappointed.

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Advanced Micro Devices Inc. acknowledged Wednesday it overpaid in its $5.6 billion acquisition of graphics chip maker ATI Technologies Inc., adding to the deepening financial woes of the slumping semiconductor company.

Sunnyvale-based AMD, the world's No. 2 maker of microprocessors behind Intel Corp., said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission it will have to write down the value of the goodwill estimate it attached to ATI when it bought the company in October 2006.

AMD said it does not currently know how big the charge will be.

Goodwill refers to the value of intangible assets such as a company's reputation or influence within an industry, or even employee morale, all of which are believed to influence its ability to drive future sales.

AMD's final purchase price for ATI included a $3.2 billion allocation for goodwill, nearly three times the value of product technology that ATI had already developed and was working on in its laboratories, according to AMD's regulatory filings.

AMD bought ATI to bolster the graphics capabilities of its chips and add valuable "chipset" technologies to its product lineup. Chipsets are responsible for sending data from the microprocessor to the rest of the computer.

AMD, until that point, focused primarily on microprocessors, which are the brains of computers.

Analysts immediately questioned the wisdom of the deal, however, expressing worries over AMD's ability to pay down the billions of dollars in debt it incurred to finance the transaction, and whether ATI's technologies would add enough value to AMD to justify the price.

AMD, which was riding high off several years of impressive market-share gains at Intel's expense, suddenly fell on hard times in the summer of 2006 when Intel struck back with a new product lineup.

AMD's finances were hurt by a fierce price battle and slumping demand for its chips, and its deep losses and gloomy outlook forced the company to go to Wall Street earlier this year to help pay down its oppressive debt.

The company offered up two rounds of convertible senior notes to investors, raising $3.65 billion from the debt offerings in April and August. AMD said the proceeds would be used to pay down debt from the ATI acquisition and fund general corporate expenses.

Other questions still linger about the ATI deal.

One month after the deal was completed, AMD and Nvidia Corp. — ATI's chief rival in the graphics chip business — disclosed that they had received Justice Department subpoenas in a criminal investigation of possible antitrust violations in the graphics industry.

Little is known about the probe, except that the subpoenas came on the heels of a lengthy Justice Department price-fixing probe of memory chip makers that led to charges against more than a dozen executives and hundreds of millions of dollars in fines.

AMD is still hurting from the competition with Santa Clara-based Intel and the ATI acquisition.

AMD has lost $1.6 billion through September, though sales continue to pick up. Analysts will be looking for more details about the company's financial outlook when AMD holds its financial analyst day Thursday in New York.

AMD's stock price has fallen by 54 percent since the start of the year in a plunge that has wiped out more than $5 billion in shareholder wealth. Shares fell 10 cents to close at $8.97 in Wednesday trading.

Billa's Battle in Kerala !

For the last one year there has been a ban in Kerala on simultaneous release of Tamil films with Tamilnadu. It means that Tamil films can be released only after two weeks of its release in Tamilnadu, to protect the interest of Malayalam films!
The ban imposed by the powerful Film Distributors Association (Kerala) (FDA) has been in force selectively. Since the rule came into force from January 1, 2007 only three films has been exempted- Pokkiri, Sivaji, ATM which were allowed to be released simultaneously, on some ground or other. Now FDA are refusing to allow the other big movie of the year Billa to release on December 14, along with the rest of the world!

Like the Mullaperiyar dam controversy or bifurcation of Palakkad Railway division and forming of Salem division, the simultaneous release of Tamil films in Kerala is going to snowball into major issue. FDA says that they are imposing this ban on simultaneous release to protect the interest of Malayalam films!
For Tamil superstar films, Kerala has become a major territory, and if simultaneous release is not there the collections suffer as pirated VCD's of the film flood the market. According to the grapevine FDA has imposed this two weeks window, because some of their members who were regular Tamil film distributors were driven out of the market due to spiraling prices and stiff competition.
A lot of people who were making Malayalam film and outsiders had entered the lucrative Tamil film distribution and Telugu films dubbed into Malayalam trade. FDA it looks like wanted to curtail it, so they imposed the ban. So unless the Tamil Film Producers Council (TFPC) steps in and solves the issue amicably, Billa will not release in Kerala simultaneously with the rest of the world!

Died: August 18, 1945
Achievements: Passed Indian Civil Services Exam; elected Congress President in 1938 and 1939; formed a new party All India Forward block; organized Azad Hind Fauj to overthrow British Empire from India.

Subhas Chandra Bose, affectionately called as Netaji, was one of the most prominent leaders of Indian freedom struggle. Though Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru have garnered much of the credit for successful culmination of Indian freedom struggle, the contribution of Subash Chandra Bose is no less. He has been denied his rightful place in the annals of Indian history. He founded Indian National Army (Azad Hind Fauj) to overthrow British Empire from India and came to acquire legendary status among Indian masses.

Subhas Chandra Bose was born on January 23, 1897 in Cuttack, Orissa. His father Janaki Nath Bose was a famous lawyer and his mother Prabhavati Devi was a pious and religious lady. Subhas Chandra Bose was the ninth child among fourteen siblings. Subhas Chandra Bose was a brilliant student right from the childhood. He topped the matriculation examination of Calcutta province and graduated with a First Class in Philosophy from the Scottish Churches College in Calcutta. He was strongly influenced by Swami Vivekananda's teachings and was known for his patriotic zeal as a student. To fulfill his parents wishes he went to England in 1919 to compete for Indian Civil Services. In England he appeared for the Indian Civil Service competitive examination in 1920, and came out fourth in order of merit. However, Subhas Chandra Bose was deeply disturbed by the Jallianwalla Bagh massacre, and left his Civil Services apprenticeship midway to return to India in 1921

After returning to India Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose came under the influence of Mahatma Gandhi and joined the Indian National Congress. On Gandhiji's instructions, he started working under Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das, whom he later acknowledged his political guru. Soon he showed his leadership mettle and gained his way up in the Congress' hierarchy. In 1928 the Motilal Nehru Committee appointed by the Congress declared in favour of Domination Status, but Subhas Chandra Bose along with Jawaharlal Nehru opposed it, and both asserted that they would be satisfied with nothing short of complete independence for India. Subhas also announced the formation of the Independence League. Subhas Chandra Bose was jailed during Civil Disobedience movement in 1930. He was released in 1931 after Gandhi-Irwin pact was signed. He protested against the Gandhi-Irwin pact and opposed the suspension of Civil Disobedience movement specially when Bhagat Singh and his associates were hanged.

Subash Chandra Bose was soon arrested again under the infamous Bengal Regulation. After an year he was released on medical grounds and was banished from India to Europe. He took steps to establish centres in different European capitals with a view to promoting politico-cultural contacts between India and Europe. Defying the ban on his entry to India, Subash Chandra Bose returned to India and was again arrested and jailed for a year. After the General Elections of 1937, Congress came to power in seven states and Subash Chandra Bose was released. Shortly afterwards he was elected President of the Haripura Congress Session in 1938. During his term as Congress President, he talked of planning in concrete terms, and set up a National planning Committee in October that year. At the end of his first term, the presidential election to the Tripuri Congress session took place early 1939. Subhas Chandra Bose was re-elected, defeating Dr. Pattabhi Sitaramayya who had been backed by Mahatma Gandhi and the Congress Working Committee. Clouds of World War II were on the horizon and he brought a resolution to give the British six months to hand India over to the Indians, failing which there would be a revolt. There was much opposition to his rigid stand, and he resigned from the post of president and formed a progressive group known as the Forward Block.

Subhas Chandra Bose now started a mass movement against utilizing Indian resources and men for the great war. There was a tremendous response to his call and he was put under house arrest in Calcutta. In January 1941, Subhas Chandra Bose disappeared from his home in Calcutta and reached Germany via Afghanistan. Working on the maxim that "an enemy's enemy is a friend", he sought cooperation of Germany and Japan against British Empire. In January 1942, he began his regular broadcasts from Radio Berlin, which aroused tremendous enthusiasm in India. In July 1943, he arrived in Singapore from Germany. In Singapore he took over the reins of the Indian Independence Movement in East Asia from Rash Behari Bose and organised the Azad Hind Fauj (Indian National Army) comprising mainly of Indian prisoners of war. He was hailed as Netaji by the Army as well as by the Indian civilian population in East Asia. Azad Hind Fauj proceeded towards India to liberate it from British rule. Enroute it lliberated Andeman and Nicobar Islands. The I.N.A. Head quarters was shifted to Rangoon in January 1944. Azad Hind Fauj crossed the Burma Border, and stood on Indian soil on March 18 ,1944.

However, defeat of Japan and Germany in the Second World War forced INA to retreat and it could not achieve its objective. Subhas Chandra Bose was reportedly killed in an air crash over Taipeh, Taiwan (Formosa) on August 18, 1945. Though it is widely believed that he was still alive after the air crash not much information could be found about him.

Om in Hinduism

Om (also spelled Aum) is a Hindu sacred sound that is considered the greatest of all mantras.

The syllable Om is composed of the three sounds a-u-m (in Sanskrit, the vowels a and u combine to become o) and the symbol's threefold nature is central to its meaning. It represent several important triads:

* The Three Worlds - Earth, Atmosphere, and Heaven
* The Three Major Hindu Gods - Brahma, Vishnu, and Siva
* The Three Sacred Vedic Scriptures - Rg, Yajur, and Sama

Thus Om mystically embodies the essence of the entire universe. This meaning is further deepened by the Indian philosophical belief that God first created sound and the universe arose from it. As the most sacred sound, Om is the root of the universe and everything that exists and it continues to hold everything together.

The syllable is discussed in a number of the Upanishads, which are the texts of philosophical speculation, and it forms the entire subject matter of one, the Mandukya.

AUM is a bow, the arrow is the self, And Brahman (Absolute Reality) is said to be the mark.(Mandukya Upanishad)

The essence of all beings is the earth.

The essence of the earth is water.

The essence of water is the plant.

The essence of the plant is man.

The essence of man is speech.

The essence of speech is the Rigveda.

All those activities which people start with uttering the syllable OM do not fail to bear fruit. (Shankaracharya's Commentary on the Taittriya Upanishad 1.8.1)

In the Puranas the syllable Om became associated in various ways with the major Hindu devotional sects. Saivites mark the lingam (a symbol of Shiva) with the symbol for Om, while Vaishnavites identify the three sounds as referring to the trinity of Vishnu, his wife Sri, and the worshiper.

Om is spoken at the beginning and the end of Hindu mantras, prayers, and meditations and is frequently used in Buddhist and Jain rituals as well. Om is used in the practice of Yoga and is related to techniques of auditory meditation. From the 6th century, the written symbol of Om was used to mark the beginning of a text in a manuscript or an inscription. Om Parvat, a sacred peak at 6191m in the Indian Himalayas, is revered for its snow deposition pattern that resembles Om.

More Detailed Symbolism

With its threefold nature, special shape and unique sound, Om lends itself to a variety of detailed symbolic interpretations.

The symbol of AUM consists of three curves (curves 1, 2, and 3), one semicircle (curve 4), and a dot. The large lower curve 1 symbolizes the waking state (jagrat), in this state the consciousness is turned outwards through the gates of the senses. The larger size signifies that this is the most common ('majority') state of the human consciousness.

The upper curve 2 denotes the state of deep sleep (sushupti) or the unconscious state. This is a state where the sleeper desires nothing nor beholds any dream.

The middle curve 3 (which lies between deep sleep and the waking state) signifies the dream state (swapna). In this state the consciousness of the individual is turned inwards, and the dreaming self beholds an enthralling view of the world behind the lids of the eyes.

These are the three states of an individual's consciousness, and since Indian mystic thought believes the entire manifested reality to spring from this consciousness, these three curves therefore represent the entire physical phenomenon.

The dot signifies the fourth state of consciousness, known in Sanskrit as turiya. In this state the consciousness looks neither outwards nor inwards, nor the two together. It signifies the coming to rest of all differentiated, relative existence This utterly quiet, peaceful and blissful state is the ultimate aim of all spiritual activity. This Absolute (non-relative) state illuminates the other three states.

Finally, the semi circle symbolizes maya and separates the dot from the other three curves. Thus it is the illusion of maya that prevents us from the realization of this highest state of bliss.

The semi circle is open at the top, and when ideally drawn does not touch the dot. This means that this highest state is not affected by maya. Maya only affects the manifested phenomenon. This effect is that of preventing the seeker from reaching his ultimate goal, the realization of the One, all-pervading, unmanifest, Absolute principle. In this manner, the form of OM represents both the unmanifest and the manifest, the noumenon and the phenomenon.

As a sacred sound also, the pronunciation of the three-syllabled AUM is open to a rich logical analysis. The first alphabet A is regarded as the primal sound, independent of cultural contexts. It is produced at the back of the open mouth, and is therefore said to include, and to be included in, every other sound produced by the human vocal organs. Indeed A is the first letter of the Sanskrit alphabet.

The open mouth of A moves toward the closure of M. Between is U, formed of the openness of A but shaped by the closing lips. Here it must be recalled that as interpreted in relation to the three curves, the three syllables making up AUM are susceptible to the same metaphorical decipherment. The dream state (symbolized by U), lies between the waking state (A) and the state of deep sleep (M). Indeed a dream is but the compound of the consciousness of waking life shaped by the unconsciousness of sleep.

AUM thus also encompasses within itself the complete alphabet, since its utterance proceeds from the back of the mouth (A), travelling in between (U), and finally reaching the lips (M). Now all alphabets can be classified under various heads depending upon the area of the mouth from which they are uttered. The two ends between which the complete alphabet oscillates are the back of the mouth to the lips; both embraced in the simple act of uttering of AUM.

The last part of the sound AUM (the M) known as ma or makar, when pronounced makes the lips close. This is like locking the door to the outside world and instead reaching deep inside our own selves, in search for the Ultimate truth.

But over and above the threefold nature of OM as a sacred sound is the invisible fourth dimension which cannot be distinguished by our sense organs restricted as they are to material observations. This fourth state is the unutterable, soundless silence that follows the uttering of OM. A quieting down of all the differentiated manifestations, i.e. a peaceful-blissful and non-dual state. Indeed this is the state symbolized by the dot in the traditional iconography of AUM.

The threefold symbolism of OM is comprehensible to the most 'ordinary' of us humans, realizable both on the intuitive and objective level. This is responsible for its widespread popularity and acceptance. That this symbolism extends over the entire spectrum of the manifested universe makes it a veritable fount of spirituality.

* Periods : Morning, Midday, and Evening.
* States : Waking-consciousness (jagriti), Dream (svapna), and deep-sleep (sushupti).

* Veda : Rigveda (knowledge of the meters), Yajurveda (knowledge of contents), Samaveda (knowledge of extension).
* Elemental Deity : Fire (Agni), Sun (Aditya), Wind (Vayu).
* Manifestation of Speech : Voice (vak), Mind (manas), Breath (prana).
* Priestly Function : Making offering, Performing ritual, and Singing.
* Tendencies : Revolving, Cohesive, and Disintegrating.
* Quality : Energy (rajas), Purity (sattva), and Ignorance (tamas).

According to Indian spiritual sciences, God first created sound, and from these sound frequencies came the phenomenal world. Our total existence is constituted of these primal sounds, which give rise to mantras when organized by a desire to communicate, manifest, invoke or materialize. Matter itself is said to have proceeded from sound and OM is said to be the most sacred of all sounds. It is the syllable which preceded the universe and from which the gods were created. It is the "root" syllable (mula mantra), the cosmic vibration that holds together the atoms of the world and heavens. Indeed the Upanishads say that AUM is god in the form of sound. Thus OM is the first part of the most important mantras in both Buddhism and Hinduism, e.g. Om Namoh Shivai and Om Mani Padme Hum.

Another ancient text equates AUM with an arrow, laid upon the bow of the human body (the breath), which after penetrating the darkness of ignorance finds its mark, namely the lighted domain of True Knowledge. Just as a spider climbs up its thread and gains freedom, so the yogis climb towards liberation by the syllable OM.

The omnific and omniparous quality of OM makes it omnipresential, and in-omissible from any spiritual practice. As an omnipotent symbol, the yogi who penetrates its mystery is indeed truly omnicompetent and omnipercipient, and as an omniscient source, it is a virtual omnibus of sacred and mystical inspirations.

Deutsche Telekom Will Let Rivals Operate iPhones

Deutsche Telekom, whose exclusive rights for the Apple iPhone in Germany are contested by the Vodafone Group, said yesterday that it would change some terms and let the handset operate on rival networks.

Deutsche Telekom will offer the device for 999 euros ($1,483) without requiring a two-year exclusive contract with its T-Mobile unit, a T-Mobile spokesman, Alexander von Schmettow, said. The original 399-euro offer with a binding contract remains valid, he said.

T-Mobile backed down after Vodafone won a court injunction that bans T-Mobile from selling the iPhone with contracts or the so-called SIM lock that prevents the phone from working on another network. In France, laws stop the Orange unit of France Télécom from selling the device with similar restrictions.

“How many people are going to spend 999 euros on a phone?” said Carolina Milanesi, a research director at Gartner, a research company in Stamford, Conn. “People are not used to spending that kind of money. In every single country now, people are going to look at the possibility of getting around the exclusivity issue.”

German customers who bought the iPhone after Monday, when the Hamburg court ruling took effect, can have their phones unlocked to work with another network operator, T-Mobile said in an e-mailed statement. It said, however, that “many of the functions will only be available to T-Mobile customers with a complete tariff package.”

The features include Web surfing on T-Mobile’s network of 8,000 Wi-Fi access points, and “visual voice mail” that allows users to hear messages without listening to previous ones.

The Payson, Utah-based company on Monday unveiled the Arantix, a mountain bike made out of hollow tubes spun from carbon fibers. The unusual design of the so-called IsoTruss tubes, based on technology from Brigham Young University, allows Delta 7 to cut down weight. A standard hard-tail mountain bike frame (without shock absorbers) made from the stuff weighs about 2.7 pounds, but it's as strong or stronger as a conventional carbon or aluminum frame, according to the company.

In 2009, Delta 7 will come out with a lightweight road bike too, said Lester Muranaka, who runs marketing and sales for the company. Delta 7's road bike will likely weigh around the same as other elite road bikes, but early tests indicate that it could be more aerodynamic and, thus, potentially give a rider an edge.

"We think the strength and aerodynamics are going to be big sellers," Muranaka said.
If anything, you'll get noticed. Delta 7 has taken its prototype out to nearby Moab, the epicenter of dirt riding in North America. There are a lot of fancy bikes in Moab, but the Arantix gets stares. Test riders must invariably answer a lot of questions.

A fully equipped bike costs $11,995--way more than any bike out there that isn't encrusted with jewels--but each one takes 300 hours to build. Volume manufacturing will lead to lower prices, according to the company. Consumers also can order the frame separately, without components, for $6,995.

The IsoTruss tubing relies on a combination of chemistry and geometry. Delta 7 takes crbon fiber, which has one of the better weight-to-strength ratios in industrial material science, and weaves it into an intricate pattern with a spool-like loom. The overall pattern consists of isosceles triangles, which are triangles with two equal sides connected to each other to form pyramids.

The weaving is done by hand. In essence, making the tubes is sort of like making a giant cat's cradle or a lanyard. One piece of carbon fiber is used for each tube. In all, a finished bike frame from Delta 7 will contain 1,672 linear feet of carbon fiber.

Kevlar is then used to fix the carbon fiber in place. The Kevlar-coated tube is inserted into an oven, where it gets baked for four hours at 255 degrees Fahrenheit.

Delta 7, which is a subsidiary of Advanced Composite Solutions, is hoping to have a machine ready in 18 months to two years that can automate the weaving process. Two other companies have licensed the IsoTruss technology for things like cell phone towers, but the hand weaving made the products uneconomical.

Delta 7 went with bikes because, well, there are always guys out there who will pay money to get something cutting-edge. CNET News.com also has written stories about anInternet-enabled exercise bike from Daum and two-wheel drive motorcycles and mountain bikes from Christini.

Delta 7 will produce 200 of the Arantix mountain bikes in 2008 and will grow production to 1,000 bikes in 2010. The first bikes will be released in the first quarter. Delta 7 is taking deposits for them now.

Rama Setu - the Bridge of Rama - is an amazing structure in the Indian Ocean, a continuous 48 km long stretch of underwater causeway which connects Rameshwaram, the southern-eastern tip of the Indian peninsula, to Talaimannar, the northern-western tip of Sri Lanka.

The name comes from Sri Rama, highly revered figure of Hindus and is connected with Ramayana, his biography. According to Hindu scriptures, Sri Rama Chandra had commanded the construction of this bridge for the passage of his army from the Indian side of the ocean to the Sri Lankan side, in order to defeat the villainous king Ravana and rescue his wife Sita who was abducted by the treacherous Ravana. This event of constructing the bridge is related in detail not only in the Ramayana, but also in other prominent texts like the Mahabharata, Skanda Purana, Sthala Purana, and several others.

This structure literally got christened by the European cartographers, who marked it as 'Adam's Bridge' in the maps, during the British colonial rule over the subcontinent. But then, who cares for the fancies of Euro-centric cartographers and academics? Not the people, at least, who have always known it as 'Ramasetu', 'Ramarsetu', 'Setumandiram' or just 'Setu'. The importance of Setu in tradition can be gauged from the fact that even the surrounding sea which it separates, is called 'Setu-Samudram' - the Sea of the Bridge, the focus being on the Bridge rather than the sea. European cartographers named the waters of Setu Samudram as Palk Strait.

Setu is of such high reverence that many parents even name their children as 'Setu Raman', 'Setu Madhav', 'Setu Sundar', or 'Setu'. Such names are popular not only amongst Tamils, but all over India and Sri Lanka.

What is the best way to improve English Pronunciation?

There is no one best way to improve English pronunciation. Some people are extremely talented in learning languages and I am not one of them. Here, I share with you how I improved my English pronunciation.

1. I had to practice the simple and most commonly used words and relied on patterns to help me recall the correct word pronunciation.

2. Even with the simple words, I could not pronounce them correctly because I had formed many bad habits and many sounds don't exist in my native language. So I had to acknowledge that there are differences between different sounds.

3. I had to repeat those words which consist of a same sound until I finally could recognize the sound.

4. I started reading short sentences everyday and made conscious efforts to correct myself when I heard myself mispronouncing words.

5. Of course, watching English movies or listening how native speakers speak are important. However, personally, I don't believe that you can learn much from the movies unless you already know the correct pronunciation of the words.

Believe it or not. Having the confidence in pronouncing each word correctly is the key in learning pronunciation and Pronunciation Patterns can help you achieve it.

NEWS: Yahoo to shutter one of its photo-sharing sites

Yahoo said it will close the site Sept. 20 at 6 p.m. EDT. Until then, users can move their photos to other photo-sharing services, including Flickr, Kodak Gallery, Shutterfly, Snapfish and Photobucket.

Yahoo said it will automatically move users' photos to the photo-sharing sites of their choice. In addition, users can download their original resolution photos to their computers. Users of the New Yahoo Photos can also get an archive CD for $6.95 plus shipping from Yahoo's partner Englaze.

If users don't tell Yahoo what to do with the photos before the site closes, their photos will be deleted and will no longer be accessible.

"Of course, we hope you'll join us at Flickr, but we also realize that Flickr may not be for everyone," Yahoo said. "In the end, we want you to find the service that's right for you, and we hope you take some time to learn more about your options before making this important decision."

Yahoo Photo features in other Yahoo products such as Yahoo Mail, Yahoo Messenger and Mobile Web will also end, and users' photos will no longer be accessible from those services, the company said.

Daily News : Duraimurugan denies PMK leader’s charge

Chennai, August 21: The Tamil Nadu government was taking firm action against illegal sand quarrying, PWD Minister K Duraimurugan said today.
Reacting to the charges of PMK founder S Ramadoss, who is continuing his tirade against the DMK government on various issues including sand quarrying, Duraimurugan said the government itself was carrying out sand quarrying and had not allowed any private party into the business.
Denying the allegation that brokers were being allowed in sand quarrying, he said ground water would not be affected due to sand quarrying and the government was not permitting digging the sand for more than three feet.
Duraimurugan said the government was not allowing any irregularities in sand quarrying and added that there was no question of loss of revenue to the government.
The DMK government had earned Rs 131 crore during 2006-2007 and Rs 30 crore up to August 19 this year. When the AIADMK was in power, the government earning from sand quarrying was only Rs 74 crore during 2005-2006, he said.
Ramadoss, who visited Kosasthalayar river yesterday, had alleged that illegal sand quarrying was flourishing and brokers were profiting in the business. (Agencies)

Chennai, August 20: Asking the public sector banks not to limit their services within the country, Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram has exhorted them to spread their wings to overseas markets as well.Public sector banks should compete with private and foreign banks in order to register a robust growth. They should not limit their services within the country, he said speaking at a function here yesterday to mark the completion of 100 years of Indian Bank.

Urging the PSU banks to go overseas, he said "you should not only cater to the needs of NRIs but also to foreign organisations and to various sections."

Giving in detail the growth of banking sector in the last three years after the UPA government assumed office, Chidambaram said the total deposit of public sector banks had increased from Rs 12,30,000 crore in 2004 to over Rs 20 lakh crore now.
While the lending had shot up to Rs 14.41 lakh crore from Rs 6.33 lakh crore, the percentage of non-performing asset had dropped to one per cent from three per cent, he said.
The Union Minister said the priority sector lending had also increased from Rs 2.40 lakh crore to Rs 5.21 lakh crore in the last three years.
Agriculture loans had been disbursed to the tune of Rs 2.05 lakh crore as against Rs 84,000 crore in 2004, while education loans to the tune of Rs 14,214 crore had been extended to 9,37,793 students compared to Rs 4,550 crore to 3,19,337 students three years ago.
Noting that the Indian Bank was facing a severe crisis a decade ago, Chidambaram commended the bank for making a turn around and emerging as one of the topmost banks in the country through sheer hard work. (Agencies)

Dance director to direct Ajith

A director has been found to direct Ajith in his next film. He is a prominent dance director.
About 50% of 'Billa' has been completed. Ajith is paired with Nayantara in this film. The other heroine is Namitha. It is directed by Vishnuvardhan who directed 'Arindhum Ariyamalum' and 'Pattiyal.' Music is by Yuvan Shankar Raja.
This re-make film was shot in Malaysia. When Ajith was taken ill, shooting had to be cancelled. Now Ajith has recovered. The crew is slogging to finish the dialogue portions and get the film released for Deepavali.
Ajith is particular that once this film is complete, he should be ready to start on his next project. Accordingly he has given call sheet to London producer Karunaas. Till now the director had not been decided upon. But now, that has also been decided. The director is none other than dance director Raju Sundaram, the brother of Prabhu Deva.
He was supposed to have directed 'Parattai Engira Azhagu Sundaram,' the remake of Kannada film 'Jogi' and starring Dhanush. He did direct a few scenes too, but after that, the film was directed by Suresh Krishna.
Hope the same thing does not happen in the Ajith film!

If a meditative man constantly worships Me through the path of devotion, all the desires of his heart are destroyed, for I reside in his heart.

As gold smelted by fire gives up its dross and gets back its real state, so the mind by means of a systematic devotion to Me winnows off its desire for work and attains to Me .

Non-envious, friendly and compassionate towards all beings, free from ideas of passion and ego-consciousness, sympathetic in pain and pleasure, forgiving, always contented, contemplative, self-controlled, of firm conviction, with his mind and intellect dedicated to Me - such a devotee is dear to Me .
